Do not trust a writer that does not sweat. It is not a job for the uninspired, faint-hearted or lazy. Good writing is a physical sport. I write best when I roll up my sleeves, when my hair is out of my face, when my wrists are bare - sans watch or jewelry. In fact, my sleeves are rolled up right now, hair askew, bare wrists and bare knuckles. It's always been this way.
To me, writing is much more active than the genteel tapping out of thoughts at a roll top desk pretending I'm Emily Brontë, a ladylike minuet poser responding to formal briefs or prompts. Sometimes it's a fight, and on rough days it can become an outright mêlée. You write and rewrite, then revise, and cut and trim and add, reading the sentences out loud to yourself to make sure the rhythm and pace and length are as solid as your word choice. Scribbling and red lining, breaking accepted sentence structures, finding new arrangements through trial and error. Pushing the barriers by making intentional grammatical errors, because you’re not in AP English Literature class anymore.
It’s about flow, it’s about the calculated zing of the bum note in a master’s jazz lick, it’s about echoing the way people speak and think. Wrestling is core to those who are sincere in their pursuit of the writing process. Once you’re done, you often have a moment of euphoria - not because you've met the deadline - but because you stuck with it, faced the verbal confrontations and frustrations and emerged. You wrote something new, something that didn't exist before you sat on your chair and got busy. From there, come visuals and executions.
Fact: The more you tussle, the better you get.

Stop frame animation. A labor of love, filming Mondrian's Broadway Boogie Woogie at the Museum of Modern Art, New York. A fresh way to prompt young people to sget out of the house and see art, instead of staying home to play video games.

In a media environment that is increasingly cluttered, grassroots collaborations are the key to success. It is really important to shine a light on people and their amazing lives - using communication skills to inform and educate, as well as to entertain. The MTV Video Music Awards executive requested something for everyone, so I invented two fun-loving teenage robots. Written and produced while carrying a six-month old on one hip. Big up to Beau Tardy for making the motion capture happen when they said it couldn't be done. In my world, NO is an opinion, not a fact.
